About This Work
A striking portrait rendered in Adelaja Nathaniel's signature mosaic style, where the face becomes a luminous patchwork of amber, rose, ochre and teal — light itself broken into facets. Cowrie shells float like stars in the darkness of her hair, echoing the shells she wears at her ears: ancient symbols of wealth, womanhood and protection, reimagined for the present. Set against a lilac cityscape dissolving into white cascades, she does not pose for the viewer — she simply is, radiant and complete. Painted by hand in oil on canvas, this is the only version of this work that exists.
Artist's Statement
"I paint Black beauty the way the sun paints the earth: in every colour at once. The cowries on her crown are a message from our ancestors — that she was precious long before the world learned to see it."
— Adelaja Nathaniel
